    Carbon molecular sieve

    Carbon molecular sieve (as shown in the right figure) is a new type of adsorbent developed in the 1970s, which is an excellent non-polar carbon material. The main component of the carbon molecular sieve is elemental carbon, which is a black columnar solid in appearance and contains a large number of micropores with a diameter of 0.28-0.36 nm and a small number of macropores and mesopores (also known as transition pores). As shown in the figure below, the specific surface area of the micropores accounts for more than 90% of the surface area of all pores of the carbon molecular sieve, and the specific surface area of the micropores generally exceeds the level of 1000 m2/G. The ability of carbon molecular sieves (CMS) for nitrogen making to separate air depends on the different diffusion rates of oxygen and nitrogen in the pores of CMS. Due to the difference in relative diffusion rates of gas molecules with different kinetic diameters, the components of gas mixtures can be effectively separated. The pore size distribution of carbon molecular sieves should be in the range of 0. 28 ~ 0.36 nm.In this range, oxygen (kinetic diameter 0. 346 nm) can quickly diffuse into the pores, while nitrogen (kinetic diameter 0. 364 nm) is relatively difficult to pass through the pores, so as to achieve the separation of oxygen and nitrogen. Carbon dioxide (kinetic diameter 0.33 nm) can also diffuse rapidly through the micropore orifice into the pore, which is a relatively strong adsorbed gas.
